Environmental education is one of the three pillars on which Nature Trust (Malta) is built. Environmental education is seen as an essential component of our strategy to help Maltese society switch over to a sustainable lifestyle. For this very reason Nature Trust (Malta) is proud to be the representatives of FEE in the Maltese Islands since 2002.
This provided schools with the opportunity of adopting a whole school approach towards achieving sustainability through tangible student led activities. Gradually, but surely, the EkoSkola programme and the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) have become synonymous with student centred school development. A special thanks also goes to the Ministry of Education, Employment and Family; the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs; HSBC Bank Malta Ltd and WasteServ Malta Ltd for their full support.
HSBC Eco-Schools Climate Initiative
HSBC and Eco-Schools International have joined forces to help students in becoming active citizens against Climate Change by reducing emissions from their schools and homes. Maltese students together with other students from 17 different countries, supported by HSBC volunteers and Eco-Schools programme staff, have carried out audits to assess their school's environmental performance. Following these audits, priorities for action were identified and action plans proposed to address, measure and monitor progress in greenhouse gas production.
The Carbon Footprint Calculator is an interesting and fun way to discover how much carbon dioxide schools are contributing. This simple and user-friendly tool helps the school community analyse the sources of emissions, raise the level of awareness in the school regarding climate change and identify tangible solutions.
This online Carbon Footprint Calculator was developed by a team of experts in collaboration with HSBC Bank Malta Ltd and EkoSkola Malta. The tool was specifically developed with the local context in mind and besides giving the user a clear indication of the carbon emissions generated it is also an excellent tool to help users manage their own emissions.
